Walking with Indonesia is a walk through Leiden starting from Leiden Central Station to the Asian Library along various sites around the historical city centre. At your tour around town you may identify a series of sites which you follow by a special walking-with-Indonesia-app. With your own smart phone you may access information that is related to the various sites, e.g.:
•On a crossroads you will hear the sounds and see the images of an Indonesian crossroads. Here we make use of the KITLV audiovisual archive Recording the future.
•At the market we display sounds and images from an Indonesian market. Same goes for public transport, food stalls etc.
•At the monument for Dutch military victims in Asia 1945-1952, we present images plus text from a war memorial in Sumatra commemorating Indonesian victims of the revolution.
•We can identify sites where (academic) migrants (students) from Asia (including Indonesian nationalists!) settled in Leiden with sounds and images from their Asian hometowns. See KITLV-publication In het Land van de Overheerser, and city walk organized by Instituut voor Indonesische Studies some years ago.
•Using expertise and documentation from the Chinese Indonesian Heritage Centre we can also focus on Chinese migrations from Indonesia to the Netherlands.
•Another connection that may be highlighted is between migrant researchers presently working at UBL/University and migrant communities living in Leiden.
Many more topics, relationships and connections will be elaborated along this walk.
