Seminar | President Duterte and his critics | Albert E. Alejo

14/12/2017 @ 15:30 - 17:00

Since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office last June 2016, thousands of Filipinos have been killed extrajudicially. In trying to stop the killings, the dynamics of critical engagement must change. In his lecture, Professor Albert Alejo S.J., will examine the challenge now facing the opposition, including the Church.

Professor Albert E. Alejo, a Jesuit priest from the Philippines, is currently visiting professor of ethnography at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. For many years he has campaigned, written and lectured against corruption in Philippine political life and has actively promoted peace initiatives in the most troubled areas of the southern Philippines.

He is the author of several works on anti-corruption, tribal minority activism, and Filipino values including Generating Energies in Mount Apo: Cultural Politics in a Contested Environment (2000), Ehemplo: Spirituality of Shared Integrity in Philippine Church and Society (2016), Tao Po! Tuloy! (1990). He is also the founder of AGILA, a training academy for indigenous leaders in Mindanao.
