Former KITLV director Peter Boomgaard passed away

With great sadness we inform you that Peter Boomgaard passed away yesterday evening. His situation had been critical since early November 2016. KITLV has lost an eminent scholar, a good colleague and a dear friend. Peter joined KITLV as director in 1991, a position he held until he resigned in 2000 to become senior researcher at the institute. He also held a position as Professor of Environmental and Economic History of Southeast Asia at the University of Amsterdam. After his retirement in 2011, Peter Boomgaard remained affiliated with KITLV as a researcher and he continued to work at the institute on a regular basis until recently. His scholarly work was innovative and testifies to his broad interest across disciplines, periods and regions.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Peter Boomgaard’s passing. He was a helpful and courteous colleague who once did me the favour of examining two of my PhD students on the same day. I was grateful to him then and now. I shall miss his friendship, his scholarly knowledge, and his dry wit.
