The dismantlement of the Netherlands Antilles

The Dutch ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations has requested KITLV to conduct a research project on the ongoing process of the dismantlement of the Netherlands Antilles. This project will culminate in a Dutch-language book and an article in several other languages on the background, process and outcome of this new phase in the Kingdom relations.

After the secession of Aruba in 1986, the Netherlands Antilles continued as a five-island state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The dismantlement of the Netherlands Antilles, presently scheduled to be completed in October 2010 (10/10/10), will result in a new constitutional arrangement. Besides the Netherlands and Aruba, Curaçao and the Dutch part of St. Martin will become autonomous countries within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, St Eustatius and Saba will be integrated into the Netherlands as special municipalities. All six islands therefore will remain non-sovereign by mutual consent.

KITLV’s director Professor Gert Oostindie will conduct this project together with Dr Inge Klinkers. Oostindie and Klinkers previously published the three-volume study Knellende Koninkrijksbanden; Het Nederlandse dekolonisatiebeleid in de Caraïben 1940-2000 (2001) and Decolonising the Caribbean; Dutch policies in a comparative perspective (2003). Knellende Koninkrijksbanden was also commissioned by the Dutch government. The present project will be completed by September 1, 2011.
