Han Jordaan
Han Jordaan (1954) is a researcher with the KITLV. He is involved in the execution of a joint project with the Institute of Netherlands History in The Hague: The Dutch and the culture in the Atlantic world, 1670-1870'.
Jordaan studied fine arts at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague and history at Leiden University, specialized in Caribbean history. The focus of his research is mainly on Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. He conducted an extensive study in the archives of the second Dutch West India Company (1674-1791) on slave trade and slavery in Curaçao, which is now partly published. Presently he is working on a dissertation about the position of the free blacks and coloreds in Curaçao society during 18th and 19th century. This research is also part of the project 'Dutch Atlantic Connections 1680-1795.
Between February 2004 and September 2006 Jordaan coordinated the pilot stage of another KITLV based project: 'The Atlantic world and the Dutch, 1500-2000'. In the preceding years he worked as an archivist at the National Archives in The Hague, as a researcher for section Medical History of the Medical Department of the Free University Amsterdam, as an independent researcher, and as a museum consultant in the Netherlands Antilles.
