Marieke Bloembergen is a cultural historian based as senior researcher at KITLV. She came at KITLV in 2008 as co-author and researcher of the NWO-funded Cultural Dynamics research program Sites, Bodies and Stories; the dynamics of cultural heritage formation in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia – a collaborative program of Free University, NIOD and KITLV in the Netherlands and Gadjah Mada University and the Eijkman Institute in Indonesia. Within that program she is at present finalizing, together with Martijn Eickhoff (NIOD), the research-project and book-manuscript Sleeping beauties, hidden forces. Archaeological sites and the dynamics of heritage formation in colonial and postcolonial Indonesia.

Marieke Bloembergen studied history at the University of Amsterdam. She wrote her her PhD-thesis (2001), published in English as Colonial spectacles; The Netherlands and the Netherlands-Indies at the world exhibitions,1880-1931 (2006), at that same University, at the Amsterdam School of Social Science Research. As a post-doc researcher at Utrecht University she wrote a monograph (published in 2009) on policing and perceptions of security in the Dutch East Indies, which she combined with a lecturer-ship in modern and (post)colonial history at the University of Amsterdam. She has published on (post-)colonial memory and imagination, and on colonial policing, surveillance and crime in the Dutch East-Indies

Her research interests include the cultural dimensions of policing, experiences of security and political transformation in (post-)colonial Indonesia. Next to that, and at present, her focus is on the moral dynamics of knowledge production in (post-)colonial Indonesia in a widening and trans-Asian context. In that framework she is preparing a research project on ‘Indonesia in the Greater Indian mind-set; cultural knowledge production across orders and borders’.

Marieke Bloembergen is also book reviews editor of the Institute’s journal BKI/Bijdragen voor Taal- Land- en Volkenkunde/ Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia and Oceania. She is member of the editorial board of the Low Countries Historical Review/BMGN and Board member of the Scientific Committee of IIAS.
