KITLV maintains a collection of more than 150,000 photos, prints, drawings, maps and songs particularly from Indonesia, the Dutch Indies, Suriname and the Caribbean. Additionally there are images of migrants from these areas who resided temporarily or resettled in the Netherlands

Recent digitization projects and digital acquisition have substantially increased our electronic holdings and led to an extensive and ever expanding eLibrary. We strive to maximize free distribution of our digital content, but some publications are only available in the Reading Room due to copyright restrictions. Please check our Library Catalogue.

Archive inventories
The KITLV holds a vertiable treasure trove of archival materials pertaining to Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. There are almost 500 meters of archives waiting for you. Fascinating new collections are regularly acquired via gifts, inheritance and purchase.  A growing collection of inventories is available here.
 

 

Southeast Asian Serials Index
The Southeast Asian Serials Index gives citations to articles from major academic and current affairs journals published in a number of countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, the Netherlands and many other countries.

 

 


 

 

Oral History Archive
The oral history archives constitute a unique collection in the shared history of Indonesia and the Netherlands.  Covering the 1930s through the 1960s, they detail daily life and personal experiences during the colonial era, WWII, the Indonesian struggle for independence and the early post-colonial period.

Aceh Books
In the wake of the devastating tsunami that struck Aceh on 26 December 2004,  a project  was initiated to digitize a major part of the literature on Aceh that is kept in the KITLV Library.
 

 

 

Javanese Diaspora (In Dutch)
Javanen in Diaspora is a website resulting from cooperation in between KITLV and the Committee for the Commemoration of Javanese Immigration. In text, photos and films, it details the experiences of Javanese migrants to Suriname. 

 

Indisch Knooppunt (In Dutch)
The Indies Connection is a innovative database designed to raise public awareness about archives about the Netherlands Indies in smaller institutions and private collections in the Netherlands.

 

 

 

World Digital Library
Pooling the resources of more than a hundred institutions around the world, the World Digital Library makes available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual format, significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the world. As of 2010, KITLV has contributed more than a third of the items pertaining to Southeast Asia.

 

 

VOC Kenniscentrum (In Dutch)
Created in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the United (Dutch) East India Company, VOC Kenniscentrum provides information about the establishment, members, ships, and commercial activities of the Company.
