Job Vacancy: PhD student KITLV / Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, 4 years full-time (38 hours / 1 FTE)

In cooperation with Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Universities of Aruba and Curaçao, KITLV searches for an ambitious and enthusiastic PhD student who will conduct research on past and present definitions and practices of cultural heritage in the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao and in the Netherlands. The researcher will work within the Traveling Caribbean Heritage project http://www.kitlv.nl/traveling-caribbean-heritage/, a project of KITLV with the universities of Aruba and Curaçao and the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The applicant will work at KITLV, while the defense of the dissertation will be at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
We are looking for a PhD candidate who:
- will engage in literature research and fieldwork in Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao and the Netherlands;
- conducts qualitative and quantitative comparative analyses of these non-sovereign territories;
- reports about these analyses in (co-)publications in international academic publications;
- and will finish a PhD dissertation within four years.
The candidate will:
- hold a MA (preferably a Research Master) in History, Anthropology, Caribbean Studies or Cultural Studies;
- have an excellent command of written and spoken Papiamentu, Dutch and English;
- have an affinity with Dutch Caribbean cultural heritage practices;
- will work with a wide range of cultural heritage workers and scholars.

Terms of employment
The candidate is expected to start in the Spring of 2017. The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year. After positive evaluation, the appointment will be extended for another 3 years.
The starting salary is € 2.191 and will increase each year after a positive evaluation (following the Collective Agreement for Dutch Universities CAO-Nederlandse Universiteiten; http://www.vsnu.nl/en_GB/cao-universiteiten.html). Benefits include pension contribution, annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
