In the post-World War II era, one country after another across Asia had overthrown its colonial overseers and realigned itself toward self-determination and horizontal, international alliances. The Non-Aligned Movement—its language of “friendly countries” and the formation of a “third way”—made possible cultural practices and exchanges that were more complicated than the binaries of abstract versus representational art, or West versus East.
