In this article Ward Berenschot discusses one of the root causes of the land conflicts plaguing Indonesia: a law article – the ‘Domein Verklaring’ – that was adopted 150 years ago this year through which the Dutch colonial state claimed control over a large part of Indonesia’s land. With this declaration the state’s outsized control over land started – a colonial heritage that continues to be a major problem.
