Research colonial and postcolonial past of the city of Tilburg

The city of Tilburg has commissioned KITLV to research Tilburg’s colonial and postcolonial past. The project is divided into 2 parts:

1) Archival research: studying the city’s colonial history until the end of the colonial era (mid-20th century).
2) Oral history: citizens of Tilburg share their personal colonial and postcolonial experiences. These interviews will be conducted by students enrolled at Tilburg educational institutions and volunteers from local sociocultural organizations.

KITLV will closely cooperate with experts at the Tilburg City Museum (Stadsmuseum Tilburg) and the Tilburg Regional Archives (Regionaal Archief Tilburg).

Research will start in the fall of 2022 and the first results are expected in June 2023. In the same year an illustrated volume on Tilburg’s (post)colonial history will be published.

Project leader is Rosemarijn Hoefte.
