The Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde / Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) aims to be a world-class research institute for the study of Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, with a focus on Indonesia and the ‘Dutch’ Caribbean, in an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. KITLV engages with the academic community across the world, as well as with artists, activists, writers, journalists, (inter)national governmental organizations, NGOs and the interested general public. In addition to a core of senior staff, most researchers at the institute are either PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers, or are affiliated through KITLV’s fellowship program. This allows for dynamic teams within a lively research community.
KITLV is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), a learned society and an organisation of eleven national research institutes. Being an institute of the KNAW makes KITLV part of a very broad scientific network.

The KITLV has several research internship opportunities for enthusiastic (research) master students with a relevant education on a regular basis.
An internship at KITLV usually covers three months and has a workweek with a minimum of 24 hours. The intern will work in a team at an ongoing research project on an independent assignment and will get the chance to gain working experience at a research institute. In addition to the assignment, the intern will have the opportunity to give a presentation at a research meeting and to attend both in-house and external seminars to broaden his/her academic network. At the end of the internship, the intern is expected to write a short paper about the results of the research.
