13 Jan Internship: ‘Shades of Clientelism. A comparative study of Indonesia’s patronage democracy’

For the research project ‘Shades of Clientelism: A comparative study of Indonesia’s patronage democracy’ we are looking for a research-intern. We are looking for an enthusiastic master student (anthropology, sociology or political science) with an interest in Indonesian politics, an inquisitive frame of mind and affinity with statistical analysis. Knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is a plus.

The internship:
– will start as soon as possible
– for two months, three/four days a week
– might be valid for ECT points (on the basis of 3 days a week, depending on university and study)
– the internship involves:
a. Analyzing the results of an expert survey on clientelistic politics that compares the character of election campaigns in 39 districts across Indonesia (for
more on the project, see here). The intern will work with the lead researcher on interpreting the results – in particular analyzing the factors driving
clientelistic political behavior.
b.Turning this material into maps and visuals
c. Helping to analyze election results of the recent 2015 local elections
– This research project is part of a broader collaborate project on citizenship and democratization in Indonesia (see the description here). The internship involves interacting and collaborating with other researchers on points of overlap between these studies

We offer:
– An opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a research institute in the handiwork of designing, conducting, analyzing and presenting research work.
– This internship might be used as preparation for (research for) writing an MA-thesis. The intern will be supported and stimulated to do so.
– An internship fee of 180 euro’s per month (gross, for three days), if needed complimented with support for travel costs.

Deadline for applications is 25 January 2016. To apply or to request more information, please contact:
