Call for papers: Conference ‘Language, Power and Identity in Asia: Creating and Crossing Language Boundaries’

15/05/2015

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden, The Netherlands, is hosting an international conference to explore the interrelations between language, power and identity in Asia. Participants are invited to submit a paper to address aspects of this topic, with a particular emphasis on Asia, but papers that illustrate the subject from other parts of the world are also welcome.

One of the members of the organising team is KITLV researcher Tom Hoogervorst who is currently studying the development of the (Indonesian) Malay language through the KITLV’s collection of Sino-Malay literature, while simultaneously attempting to cast a new light on cultural contact, the introduction of new concepts and the role of popular culture during late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Conference dates: 14-16 March 2016.
