Two new articles resulting from the ‘Confronting Caribbean Challenges’ project

Two new articles by KITLV researchers Jessica Vance Roitman and Wouter Veenendaal have come out in the past week. Wouter and Jessica are part of the ongoing ‘Confronting Caribbean Challenges‘ project.

Wouter’s article ‘Smallness and Status Debates in Overseas Territories: Evidence from the Dutch Caribbean’ has come out in the journal Geopolitics and examines the relationship between voters and those they elect in the Dutch Caribbean. The article shows how this relationship affects local debates about the political status.

Jessica’s article ‘Land of Hope and Dreams: Slavery and Abolition in the Dutch Windward Islands, 1825-1865‘ appeared in the journal Slavery and Abolition. It takes a regional perspective on the influence of British abolition of slavery on the nearby Leeward Islands, particularly the Dutch islands of Saba, St. Maarten, and St. Eustatius.
