Dear friends and colleagues,

In September this year, Henk Schulte Nordholt will retire from academia after four decades of passionate teaching, research, and administration, a period in which he energized the study of Indonesia, in the Netherlands, in Indonesia, and well beyond. As Head of Research of the Koninklijk Instituut voor voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (KITLV) in Leiden, and as a professor of Asian and Indonesian History first at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, next the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and presently Leiden University, he has inspired generations of students, PhD researchers and colleagues, encouraging the interdisciplinary study in and of Southeast Asia, past and present.
