Project

Indonesia in transition: From Revolution to nation-building, 1943–1958

Merdeka

Completed project

2017-2021

This research offers an alternative perspective on the struggle for independence. This project focused on state-sanctioned vigilante violence as a key feature of Indonesian state formation.

The resulting, popularizing monograph on the Indonesian Revolution, Merdeka: De strijd om de Indonesische onafhankelijkheid en de ongewisse opkomst van de Republiek 1945–1950, offers, for a Dutch-language publication, a rare but important perspective on the internal Indonesian political and ideological struggles that accompanied the consolidation of the Republic.

This book, which was longlisted for the Libris History Prize, has been translated into English and Indonesian.
