Since it was founded in 1851 as an association (Vereniging), the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde / Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) had a threefold mission: collection development and management, research, and publishing academic work, all mainly on Indonesia and the ‘Dutch’ Caribbean. The specific ways in which these goals were met, changed tremendously during the years.
On 1 January 2000, the KITLV became an institute of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen / Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
The Members Association / Vereniging KITLV continued its activities alongside the research institute KITLV-KNAW.
