On 12 May the kick-off of the collaboration between the KITLV and the Kadaster of St. Maarten took place. In January 2025 KITLV director Diana Suhardiman and senior researcher Francio Guadeloupe met with Kadaster director Benjamin Ortega, which led to establishing a partnership to enhance the conservation and management of the island’s historical documents.

Science communication coordinator Daniella Britt (KITLV), who was on a four-week working visit to St. Maarten in May and June, led the session. Drawing from her prior experience with the National Archives of Aruba and experience working in the heritage field, Britt spoke about successful regional examples of accessible and affordable digitized heritage collections, discussed the challenges and opportunities specific to the archival field in St. Maarten, and explored the feasibility of offering virtual and in-person training programmes to strengthen local capacity.
