[English version available]. Op vrijdag 26 juni 2026 viert het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land-, en Volkenkunde (KITLV) haar verjaardag en u bent uitgenodigd! We openen onze deuren en organiseren in samenwerking met de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden (UBL) een publieksfestival ter ere van ons 175-jarig bestaan. In het veelzijdige programma komen elementen samen die de Vereniging en het Instituut typeren.

De Vereniging presenteert activiteiten en publicaties die in de afgelopen jaren zijn gesteund. Op creatieve wijze brengen onderzoekers van het Instituut hun projecten over het voetlicht.  De werken die uit het Atelier KITLV zijn voortgekomen worden tentoongesteld en toegelicht. Er is ook aandacht voor eten, dans, documentaires en spoken word. Bij onze buren van de UBL worden manuscripten, foto’s, kaarten en andere objecten uit de KITLV Collectie belicht.

Tijdens dit publieksfestival willen we ook reflecteren op de laatste 25 jaar. Ons werk komt voort uit nieuwsgierigheid, betrokkenheid en beleving en daarover gaan we graag in gesprek. Wat betekent ons werk en voor wie is het belangrijk? Waar zouden we meer aandacht aan moeten schenken en waar moeten we voor waken? Tijdens het festival is volop ruimte voor gesprekken en discussies vooral met mensen uit de landen, samenlevingen en gemeenschappen met wie we (willen) samenwerken en waar ons werk over gaat.

We zien u graag op 26 juni in het Herta Mohr gebouw aan de Witte Singel 27a te Leiden!

De uitnodiging met het festivalprogramma en aanmeldingsformulier ziet u begin mei tegemoet.

ENGLISH VERSION

On Friday 26 June, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian en Caribbean Studies (KITLV) celebrates its birthday and you are invited! We will open our doors and, in cooperation with the University Libraries Leiden (UBL), organize a festival in honour of our 175th anniversary.

The diverse programme brings together elements that typify the Association and the Institute. The Members’ Association will present the activities and publications it has supported during the past years. In creative ways, the researchers of the Institute will showcase their work. The artworks produced in the Atelier KITLV will be exhibited and contextualized. There will also be food, dance, documentaries and spoken word. At our neighbours at UBL manuscripts, photos, maps and other objects from the KITLV Collection will be on display.

We also want to reflect on the past 25 years. Our work is rooted in curiosity, involvement and shared experience, and therefore we gladly engage in conversation with society. What is the meaning of our work and for whom is it important? To what should we pay more attention and what should we be wary of? During the festival there will be ample time for conversation and discussion, especially with people from the countries, societies and communities with which we (want to) cooperate and who are what our work is about.
