Harmilyanti Sulistyani

Harmilyanti Sulistyani is a lecturer at the Architecture Department of Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta. She obtained her Ph.D. from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in March 2022. Her research activities focus on architecture and heritage. Harmilyanti spotlights on architecture to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities.

During her visiting fellowship at KITLV, Harmilyanti will do research on urban kampung architecture with everyday audiovisual documentation data for two decades from the Recording of The Future project. The research will significantly contribute to sustainable development, especially in understanding place-making by exploring audiovisual data and interpreting the kampung as space and place. 

The research uses a sociocultural perspective to find the conceptual understanding of urban kampung architecture, and expected to see the perception of space in kampung communities. The knowledge will give a new dimension to understanding urban kampung and will be useful for the government to develop urban kampung. The research aim is exploring the role of the community in shaping the urban kampung, particularly within its social and historical context.
