Amiel Lopez is an anthropologist from the Southern Philippines. He is a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at Ateneo de Davao University.
He finished his degree in Master of Arts in Anthropology in 2024. His research “Localizing Climate Change: Perspectives from the Urban Sama-Bajaus,” won the inaugural Cultivating Humanities and Social Sciences Award of the Association for Asian Studies.For nearly a decade, he has been journeying with the Sama Dilaut (Bajaus) across the Philippines, from homeseas to urbanities, bridging research and praxis as the co-founder of DYESABEL Philippines. He is also as the Vice President for Mindanao of Ugnayang Pang-Aghamtao (UGAT), the Anthropological Association of the Philippines, and the TRACE Philippines Coordinator of the KITLV/Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.His research interests dive at the entanglements of climate, knowledge systems, urbanity, mobility, gender, indigeneity, maritime studies, and environmental anthropology. Beyond academia, he enjoys co-learning the art of freediving — both in water and life.
