We are delighted to invite you to the screening of the documentary film Gail and Bharat directed by Somnath Waghmare (director of Chaityabhumi) The documentary traces the lives of anti-caste scholars and activists Gail Omvedt and Bharat Patankar, and the journey of the movement they led in India. Following screenings of the film at various universities and civil society organizations in the UK and Germany, we are happy to host the film and the filmmaker in the Netherlands.  Mr. Waghmare will introduce the film and take questions from the audience.

The event is being jointly organized by Leiden University (South and Southeast Asia Lecture Series), University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis), and the Royal Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITVL). The film screening will also be an occasion to announce and inaugurate a network of critical and progressive scholars in the Netherlands who focus on South Asia and the South Asian diasporas. Further information such as the name, vision, objectives, and scope of network will be shared at the event. Please share your suggestions and feedback at the venue.

Format event

The film screening will take place at the KITLV in Leiden. Seats are limited, please register (see buttons in the right menu)! After the film screening there is the possibility to join the discussion online. Please also register to receive the Zoom link (see also button in the right menu).
