Diana Suhardiman participated as a discussant for the screening of Beyond Carbon, an immersive film that transports viewers to an Indigenous Dayak village in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Created in close collaboration with village elders, women, and youth, Beyond Carbon merges remote sensing data with animation and live-action footage. The result is a powerful experience that encapsulates the deep interdependence between humans and our more-than-human planetary co-dwellers.

The film highlights a tropical rainforest ecosystem that ranks among the planet’s richest biodiversity areas, yet faces increasing threats from mining, palm oil, and carbon offset plantations. The screening prompted critical reflections on how we understand these landscapes, asking: (1) What kinds of data are used to represent a place?; (2) What worldviews do these datafications represent?; and (3) How can we confront the colonial legacy of extractivism to finally put differently situated knowledges in conversation with one another?
