Onsite event
The TASTE project warmly invites colleagues and friends to join us for an iftar gathering. Boeka (Cape Malay) and buka puasa (Malay/Indonesian/ Sri Lankan Malay) both signify the act of breaking the fast. Across the Indian Ocean world, this moment brings together food and forms of communal belonging.
The evening will begin with short reflections by TASTE researchers on Ramadan / Ramazan meals and culinary traditions from their respective countries of study. These presentations will explore how dishes and practices circulate across regions and the forces that shape them. In this way, the iftar table may be considered a site of nourishment and also a setting in which culinary practices and traditions are sustained.
At sunset, we will break the fast together. We invite those observing Ramadan / Ramazan to bring their own salaah mats (sajjada) for the Maghrib prayer. All attendees are encouraged to bring a small dish or drink to share, so that we may collectively partake in the meal. Rice will be provided. All are welcome — whether observing Ramadan / Ramazan or joining in collegial reflection and exchange.
